Unlike other South Dakota cities like Sioux Falls and Rapid City, Yankton last year saw a big drop in building.
The city in 2013 issued $12.8 million worth of building permits, a 57 percent drop from $30 million in 2012 and the lowest level in 15 years.
By comparison, Sioux Falls set a city record with $588.2 million in permits last year, and Rapid City's $244.3 million was the second-highest in city history.
Yankton building official Joe Morrow says the 2013 drop in that city was due partly to the start of some big projects in 2012 including a $17 million hospital expansion. He says home renovations also have slowed after repair projects in recent years due to hail storms.
