Workforce Summits End
PIERRE, SD -

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has held his last in a series of workforce summits this week intended to gather ideas on what the state can do, if anything, to address a shortage of qualified workers.  

The state particularly needs welders, accountants, as well as information technology and health care professionals.  

Daugaard's chief of staff, Dusty Johnson, says the state can promote South Dakota and its jobs to out-of-staters. He says the state can also reach out to younger, older and disabled people who are underemployed.  

Daugaard met with business and education leaders in Mitchell, Watertown, Brookings, Rapid City, Aberdeen and Sioux Falls between April and June.   The effort cost the state an estimated $130,000.  

The governor's office will produce a report on the summits.
