A Harrisburg man was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital by helicopter after a serious accident in Manley, Minnesota. It happened at Manley Tire and Oil at 1:45 Monday afternoon and as of right now, investigators aren't sure what happened.
Authorities say Justin Hastings was working on a tire at Manley Tire and Oil Service when something went terribly wrong.
"It sounds like the tire slipped off or the tire was too big or too small, we're not quite sure exactly what the extent was there," Rock County Sheriff Evan Verbrugge said.
Six emergency vehicles from the surrounding area and one helicopter responded to the accident. The Sheriff says Hastings' injuries didn't appear to be life threatening, but they are serious.
"I know he had a large gash in his forehead; he was transported by Avera McKennan air ambulance back to Sioux Falls," Verbrugge said.
County Highway 4 was blocked off to traffic for 45 minutes before Hastings was loaded in the helicopter and flown to Sioux Falls.
While authorities aren't sure exactly what happened, the sheriff does say working on tires can be a dangerous job.
"We've had an incident like this at a welding shop in Luverne 15 some years ago, but over at Manley, they are pretty good about safety, so it's very rare we've had this," Verbrugge said.
Authorities say OSHA may be called in to investigate the accident.
