The Rapid City Council has approved a $1.7 million contract for the first phase of work at a future soccer complex in the northeastern part of the city.
The work includes an extension of the city's water main, and irrigation and seeding of the $4.6 million, 12-field complex.
The city has approved about $3.8 million for the project from sales tax revenue. A local soccer group will need to raise the rest privately.
