Sioux Falls Police are looking for a suspect accused of violently raping a 30-year-old woman in downtown.
The victim said she was walking downtown at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday near the 500 block of North Main Avenue when a man grabbed her by the hair and pulled her into an alley. She told police he raped her and then ran away.
Police say random crimes like this do not often happen in Sioux Falls because typically rape victims and the suspects know each other. Officers urge you to not walk alone at night, stay in well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings.
"If people hear or see anything that they think is suspicious, could be somebody yelling help, could be whatever. Somebody hanging in the shadows that they're not sure what that person is doing or you're not comfortable, we'd always ask that person to call 911," Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.
When the man ran off, the victim walked to the law enforcement center, which is just a block from where it happened, and she reported the crime. She describes him as a white man with a shaved head. She said his height is between 5'6" and 5'10", weighing between 160 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
