Woman Killed Before Standoff, Suspect Found Dead

Woman Killed Before Standoff, Suspect Found Dead
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

One person is dead in what appears to be a crime spree across central Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls police say it began when a man with a gun took his two children from a baby sitter's home near 18th Street and Holly Avenue around 1:00 p.m.

A short time later, a woman was found dead of a gunshot wound in a car at 2715 W. 41st Street, which is near Kiwanis Avenue.

Shortly after 4 p.m., police announced they had found the suspect dead inside the Cost Cutters salon at 41st Street and Kiwanis Avenue.  They say he had walked into the salon and held the four employees hostage for a short time before the four women walked out unharmed.  They told police the man was still inside and that they may have heard a gunshot.

The children, who officials believe are both under the age of two, are in police custody.  They are not sure yet whether the suspect knew the woman who was killed.

The O'Gorman Junior High and High School Buildings had to be put under lockdown because of the standoff.

O'Gorman Principal Kyle Groos says the exterior doors to the school buildings were locked and staff was escorting students into the building from the parking lot.  Students were able to continue with the school day inside the building as usual and were dismissed from class at their regular time Tuesday afternoon.

Drivers were also being detoured around 41st Street and Kiwanis Avenue, but shortly after 4 p.m., both streets opened to traffic. Sheldon Lane to the east of the strip mall was also blocked off for a time.

KELOLAND News will continue to update this story as information is confirmed.
