Witnesses Describe Deadly Sioux Falls Crash

February 14, 2013, 5:50 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Witnesses Describe Deadly Sioux Falls Crash
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

One person is dead and several others are hurt after a midday crash at one of South Dakota's busiest intersections.

Just before noon Thursday, a speeding SUV collided with two other vehicles and flipped over at the intersection of 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls.

Witnesses have told police that the vehicle that caused the crash was driving between 65 and 100 miles per hour on Minnesota Avenue and showed no signs of slowing down when the collision happened.

The speeding vehicle was a Chevy Blazer that finally stopped when it landed upside down by the gas pumps at Taylor's Pantry.

"I heard a boom and all of a sudden I just saw pieces of plastic and car flying over my car," witness Mike Kvanli said.

Before the Blazer, stopped it collided with at least two other vehicles, destroyed one of the signs at Taylor’s Pantry and left witnesses shaken.

"I'd say he was doing at least 60, at least 60. He was flying," witness Clyde Hinrickson said.

Hinrickson says the SUV nearly hit him before hitting a Dodge Durango. The speeding Blazer spun out the Durango and caused it to collide with a pick-up truck at the intersection.

"He hit the vehicles and went flying up in the air and hit that sign and went spinning around," Hinrickson said.

The witnesses who were at the intersection say there were kids riding in at least one of the vehicles involved in the crash. They also say several people were injured.

"I just saw people getting out of crumpled vehicles and they are bleeding and stumbling around," Kvanli said.

While three vehicles were involved in the initial collision, up to seven were damaged.

"I don't have the details of all the vehicles that were struck, but it sounds like we have quite a few vehicles that were involved in this," Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

And while the pictures of the aftermath of the crash are bad enough, those who saw it say it's a sight they don't want to see for themselves again.

"It's just terrible," Kvanli said.

Police haven't identified the victim who died or which vehicle they were in.

They also haven't released the exact number of injuries from this crash or how severe the injuries are.
