Winter Storm Hits South Dakota

February 10, 2013, 8:14 AM by Perry Groten

Winter Storm Hits South Dakota

The winds are picking up and the snow is piling up in a weekend blizzard that's pounding many parts South Dakota.

Shelly Anderson with the Coffee Cup Truck Stop in Summit says the snow is up to her knees.  She says several cars are stranded in the ditch along Interstate 29.  Members of the University of North Dakota hockey team and fans are waiting out the storm at the truck stop after their buses became stuck in the snow.

Spink County authorities have issued a no-travel advisory.  They report several accidents north of Redfield.  Driver are having to turn around on Highway 212 because of the poor conditions.

In Sioux Falls, city sanders began applying chemical de-icer on emergency routes at 1:00 Sunday morning.   Plows are on standby in case streets get too snowy.  The overnight crew will be relieved by a new shift at noon.

Great Bear Recreation Park in Sioux Falls is closed Sunday because of the storm.
