Wine Business In SD Town Turns Heads
April 18, 2011, 8:06 AM
CUSTER, SD -
Naughty names on products at the Naked Winery in Custer are drawing complaints.
Owner Cory Polzine says the business's name is a playful pun on the wine's single ingredient. The Naked Winery uses only grapes and doesn't add such things as sugar or other flavorings.
It also has a risque approach to naming its products, with wines such as Foreplay Chardonnay. The store's sign also has a naked female form in silhouette.
Some residents and business owners say the sales strategies are inappropriate for the "family friendly" tourist community in western South Dakota. Some want the City Council to govern adult-oriented businesses. Mayor Harold Stickney says officials have decided state law is sufficient.
