Wild Anniversary Celebration

June 15, 2014, 10:00 PM by Sammi Bjelland

Wild Anniversary Celebration
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Wild Water West has been a popular summer spot for decades.

This year, the aquatics park is celebrating 25 years of business in Sioux Falls, and they're using the anniversary to help others.

On hot summer days, there's nothing quite like cooling off in the pool. This summer you can take a dip, and help people in need.

"We're really excited to give back to the city and give back to those people that need our help the most. We thought this was a great partnership to include our admission prices being special as far as for them benefiting with the two can donation," Wild Water West Marketing and Aquatics Manager Emily McNamara said.

"I feel good about it because somebody else needs it more than I do," pool visitor, Natasha Brisson said.

Wild Water West is using its 25th anniversary to collect canned goods for Feeding South Dakota. But the promotion is also helping pool visitors.

If you bring in two cans of food after 4:00 p.m. on the 25th of every month, admission is only $2.50 a person.

"That's unlimited everything. So they get the whole water park, as well as the bumper boats, mini golf, batting cages, and sand volleyball. And go carts," McNamara said.

"I think it's a great program and everyone who can do it should do it," Brisson said.

Natasha Brisson is one of the many visitors who came out to the first 25th Anniversary Celebration.
And it just happened to land on Memorial Day weekend.

With big crowds, Feeding South Dakota received some generous donations and a lot of publicity.

"The food that's collected at these events is big. But it's also that educational awareness opportunity it provides as well," Matt Gassen, Executive Director for Feeding South Dakota said.

Feeding South Dakota Executive Director, Matt Gassen, reports that just from Memorial Day weekend, 2 barrels were filled with about 500 pounds of food. Which can go a long way.

"Roughly, a barrel of food is going to provide essentially in the neighborhood of 200 meals. So that just kind of gives you an idea of the impact," Gassen said.

"I feel at this point in my life I've done pretty well for myself, and to give to others feels great," Brisson said.

Gassen says it's always touching for the non-profit to have not only private donors like Brisson, but large businesses that share their success with people in need.

"I think it just kind of goes to show the kinds of people that we have in this community. And the kinds of people that run the businesses that are in this community. That it's not always all about them," Gassen said.

While Wild Water West celebrates 25 years at the same location, they can't help but look back at the generosity the community has given them.

"You know, it feels great. We have come so far from our first year starting off with just a two go-cart track, to now having a huge water park as well as all of our dry rides included," McNamara said.

Achievements they plan to celebrate throughout the rest of the summer.
