Whittier Middle School in Sioux Falls was on lockdown for a time Monday afternoon.
It was a safety precaution because of a "situation" in the neighborhood just before 4 p.m.
Buses were able to leave on time and we're told students were released to their parents.
Police have blocked off part of Indiana Avenue at 6th Street.
Authorities say there is a person barricaded inside a home near the school.
The Sioux Falls School District released this statement Monday afternoon:
We locked all doors at Whittier Middle School because of a situation in the Whittier neighborhood. Students who typically walk home after school will not be allowed to leave until police give us the "all clear." Students who ride buses are being safely loaded in an area that is away from the situation and will arrive safely at their homes. Parents who typically pick up their students at the school must come into the building to check them out.
