What Would You Do With $500 Million?

November 28, 2012, 8:37 AM by Austin Hoffman

What Would You Do With $500 Million?
BRANDON, SD -

While many are thinking about the holiday season, some only have a large sum of money are their minds. The record Powerball jackpot is sitting at an estimated $500 million ahead of Wednesday's drawing.

If someone picks the lucky numbers, they can walk away with a lump sum of around $327 million, or annual payments for 30 years.

Whichever it is, it's more money than most people will ever have in their lifetime. But if you won, what would you do with it?

The odds of winning the lottery can seem daunting, but that's not stopping people from playing.

The thought of having millions of dollars in your bank account even brings out people who normally don't ever buy a ticket.

"I normally don't do that kind of thing but if you don't try it, you're not going to win," Brandon resident Chad Schetter said.

Customer after customer walked away from the Sinclair gas station in Brandon Tuesday night with their lucky ticket. Schetter says when you have a record jackpot, nearly everyone who can, probably will try their luck.

"It doesn't surprise ya at all. I mean this is a big deal for a lot of people, me included. If you win, great, if you don't win, well, you donated to the cause," Schetter said.

He says he usually only plays at most once a year, if that. But the thought of an overflowing bank account is an intriguing investment.

"I just figured I gotta give it a try, come in to get three tickets and go from there. Hope you win," Schetter said.

If the winning numbers do fall between his fingertips, he says paying off the house and getting back into racing are on his list. But the first thing he’ll do is nothing at all.

"Probably not say much to anybody for a little bit until you get your affairs in order but that probably take a little time off, pay some bills and go from there, see what happens," Schetter said.

Your chances of winning the lottery are approximately one in 175,223,510. Your odds are better at hitting back-to-back hole-in-ones on a par-three golf course or getting sworn in as President of the United States.
