What Women Want In Their 20s

What do women want out of life?  It's a question that doesn't always have an easy answer and women aren't the only ones looking for it.

A recent nationwide survey found women are generally unhappy with their lives more so than men and their level of dissatisfaction has grown over the last several decades.

This week on HealthBeat, we're sitting down with a group of women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s to talk about some of the issues they face and what's keeping them from being happy to help them and others find some solutions.

As a working mother, 27-year-old Shayla Ebsen's story reads a lot like many 20 and 30-year-olds.

Ebsen enjoys spending time with her two-year-old son, Christopher.  But with a husband, housework, and a full-time job she often lacks time to spend by herself.

"I think it's a weird transition period because I went from the college life where it's all about you all the time; all of a sudden a few years later, it's a complete switch," Ebsen said.

Finding personal time is one of the main issues women talked about during our What Women Want discussion. Behavior Coach Shelly Hoefs says finding time for yourself is important to maintain happiness and also find direction in life.

"If I stop and pause and look at what's really important, then I make time for what's really important," Hoefs said.

But in today's fast-moving society, how do you find personal time? Hoefs recommends scheduling that time in, not being afraid to say "no" to others' requests, and as far as a baby sitter goes, find another family with kids and take turns watching the children.

"When we first were married and Christopher was born, I would feel really guilty if I would go do anything by myself. I would feel like people would think I'm abandoning my child," Ebsen said.

But now Ebsen is starting to realize the benefits of scheduling time to do something you enjoy. She takes part in a sand volleyball league.  And as far as the guilt, that's sliding away.

"I just feel refreshed after going out and doing my own thing and coming home. It's just a new perspective, especially if you have had a bad day, it helps," Ebsen said.

We're also asking women on Facebook what issue they struggle with most: finding personal time, balancing time among different relationships, managing a career, or dealing with change.
