Employees from Western Sky Financial plan to show up at a special session of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council Wednesday to show support for the closed company.
The high-interest online lender, which operates from the Cheyenne River Reservation, was forced to close in September because of a laundry list of lawsuits it faces from states that think the company's loans are illegal.
Employees now want the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe to show its support of Western Sky as the business moves through the courts. They will be asking the Tribal Council to pass several resolutions Wednesday.
Long-time Lower Brule Tribal Chairman Michael Jandreau is already showing his support, urging tribes in the Great Plains to come together to back tribal-based businesses. Jandreau says the numerous lawsuits against Western Sky are chipping away at sovereignty and a tribe’s ability to govern itself.
