Weekend Storm Slows Monday Morning Travel

Weekend Storm Slows Monday Morning Travel

This weekend’s storm left many of eastern South Dakota's roads in rough shape, creating hazardous travel conditions Monday morning.

As KELOLAND’s Austin Hoffman took to the road, traveling north on Interstate-29, a semi was jack-knifed in the ditch about 20 north of Brookings, just before 5:30 a.m.

I-29 is very spotty. There are sections of the road that are clear of ice, but other parts of the road are ice covered. The passing lane is actually in better condition than the driving lane.

The further north you travel, the worse the roads get. The worst conditions reported Monday morning were between Brookings and Watertown.

But, plows are out on the Interstate, pouring a salt-gravel mixture on the slippery spots.

The majority of vehicles on the roads were only going about 50 miles per hour early Monday morning.

But, Monday’s road conditions are better than Sunday’s. Roads were very icy and slippery and travel was moving very slow most of the day on Sunday.

In addition to I-29, Interstate-90 to the west is also slippery in areas.

If you are planning on hitting the road Monday morning, you may want to give yourself some extra travel time.

For more information on road conditions, call 511 or visit Safe Travel USA’s website.
