A group of South Dakota hunters hit the fields today near Howard for a pheasant hunt. The hunt was also a way to give back to those who've sacrificed so much for this country.
The South Dakota Chapter of the Outdoor Adventure Foundation is holding a pheasant hunting weekend for Wounded Warriors of South Dakota.
"These guys are out fighting for our country and putting a lot of time and effort in overseas, here, weekends. They're protecting our families and we want to give back and do a little bit to say thanks," Co-Director Corey Johnson said.
The weekend includes a stay at the Top Gun Hunting Lodge just south of Howard. Jacob Vissia received a purple heart during his tour in Afghanistan. The National Guard member is amazed at the effort the foundation put forward to make his weekend memorable.
"They're giving a lot of themselves and their time and it takes a lot of moving parts to put something like this together," Jacob Vissia said.
The Outdoor Adventure Foundation does more than just help Wounded Warriors, they also hold outdoor events for children and young adults with cancer or other life threatening illness.
"They've got a chance to affect a lot of different lives with the programs that they're putting on here," Vissia said.
Since Vissia has been back in this country, he has been overwhelmed by the support, and it extends beyond the fields of KELOLAND.
"You see it when you wear your uniform and little kids come up and thank you. There's just so many people in this country, and this state that are willing to give of themselves of their time and efforts. Oh man it's great," Vissia said.
The Outdoor Adventure Foundation is looking for fundraising to put more events on. They will be having a banquet in Sioux Falls in March.
