Wednesday Evening Business Brief

Wednesday Evening Business Brief

Investors first reaction to earnings season was to sell stocks today. The Dow fell about 129 points to finish at 13,345. The S&P dropped nearly 9 points to 1,433. The Nasdaq slipped 13 to 3,052.

  • Stronger housing markets were noted by the Federal Reserve's Beige Book survey released today. The Fed says growth improved in 10 of its 12 regional banking districts from mid-August through September, while leveling off in one region and slowing in another.
  • Blame it on the shift to smaller devices, like tablets and smartphones. A new report predicts worldwide sales of personal computers are bound for their first annual decline in 11 years. The forecast from research firm IHS iSuppli projects that nearly 349 million PCs will be shipped this year. That would be a 1 percent decrease from last year.
  • The Internal Revenue Service says Commissioner Doug Shulman will step down next month. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate in March 2008.
  • When was the last time you returned a glass Coke bottle for a deposit? The last 6.5-ounce returnable glass bottle has rolled off the Coca-Cola bottling production line. You can still buy other non-returnable glass bottles, if you want.
