WBK: Vikings Drop Warriors

Despite sitting for most of the first half, Shaunteva Ashley became the 28th player to score at least 1,000 points in her career in 80-71 Augustana win over Winona State on Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.  The Vikings improved to 12-9 (8-9 NSIC) with the win, while the Warriors dropped to 8-13 (4-13 NSIC) on the year.

Ashley – who played just four minutes in the first half – finished with 18 points for Augustana.  The junior went scoreless in the first half after picking up two quick fouls to start the game, came out in the second half and went on a scoring flurry.  Ashley went 4 of 7 in the second half, and a perfect 8 of 8 from the foul line, on her way to cracking the 1,000-point barrier.

Emily Schulte finished with 17 points and four assists for the Vikings.  Schulte also notched three steals in the win.

Alex Kneeland chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.

WSU was led by Abby Busch, who had a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight boards in the loss.

Tara Roelofs poured in 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting for Winona State.

The Vikings came out to a fast start, taking a 16-10 lead at the first media timeout.  Riley Nordgaard found her offense early, scoring six points for Augustana.  The Vikings started  out hot, knocking down six of its first nine shots to start the contest.

Schulte would go on her own mini 7-2 run to put Augustana up 23-12 with 12:17 remaining in the first half.  The Sioux Falls, S.D. native scored with a three, a midrange jumper, and layup.  Schulte's points during the run would be all she scored in the first half.

A Busch 3-pointer would end an 11-2 Vikings' run, putting Winona State down 27-15 with 9:59 left in the first half.

A made Hartman jumper coming out the media timeout was part of a 9-0 Warriors' run that cut the Augustana lead to six at 27-21 with 7:59 remaining in the first half.

WSU tied the game up at 29-29 on a Busch jumper with 4:23 left until halftime.  For Busch, it was her fourth made field goal of the half, erasing a 15-point Augustana lead.

Hayley McCarron would end the 23-2 Winona State run with a basket in the paint that snapped a six-minute scoreless streak for the Vikings.

Augustana's offense would stall for the final 10 minutes of the first half, trailing 37-34 at the break.

Nordgaard led the Vikings with eight points and six rebounds.

The Vikings continued their struggle with the long ball, launching 19 3-ponters, but only connecting on four in the first half.

Winona State shot 14 of 31 (45.2 percent) in the first half, while Augustana finished with 35.1 percent (13 of 37).

The second half got underway with Ashley getting her offense into gear after watching the Vikings lose a 15-point point edge in the first half.  The former Roosevelt High standout scored the Vikings first seven points for Augustana after going scoreless in the first half.

Rhianna Gullickon's made layup gave the Vikings their first lead in the second half at 43-42 with 15:15 left.  The basket came as part of a 12-2 Augustana run early in the half.

The Vikings' defense upped its intensity in the second half, forcing six turnovers within the first seven minutes of the half.

A pair of made threes by Kneeland gave Augustana its first double-digit lead at 54-44 in the second half.

The Vikings pushed their lead back up to 15 at 67-52 after an Ashley three at the 6:18 mark in the second half.  It was the Sioux Falls, S.D. natives 10th point of the half, pushing her games in double figures streak to nine.

Ashley would make history on after a pair of made free throws gave her 1,000th career point, and put Augustana up 73-57 with 1:51 left in the contest.

The Vikings closed out the game hitting their free throws, winning 80-71.

I believe congratulations are in order
To Ashley, who became just the 28th player in team history to break the 1,000-point mark.
