WBK: SDSU Drops WIU
BROOKINGS, SD -

South Dakota State used a 17-8 in the game’s final 4:35 to extend its home win streak to 16 games with an 83-79 victory over Western Illinois in Summit League women’s basketball action Saturday in front of 2,276 fans in Frost Arena. The 16-game win streak is the third longest in SDSU history.

The Jackrabbits, now 19-8 overall and 10-1 in the Summit, had five players score in double figures. Senior guards Tara Heiser (Watertown) and Steph Paluch (Pierre) joined junior forward Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) for team-high honors with 14 points each. Junior guard Gabby Boever (Worthington, Minn.) and freshman guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) each added 10 points.  Senior forward Hannah Strop (New Prague, Minn.) snared a team-high nine rebounds.

SDSU trailed 71-66 with 4:35 remaining after Western Illinois’ Marley Hall made the first of two free throws. Clarin and Paluch scored on back-to-back possessions to bring the Jackrabbits within one, 71-70 with 3:47 left. Paluch would the game at 72 all by hitting two free throws with 3:19 remaining.

Western Illinois would take a 73-72 lead when Rebecca Henricson made the second of two foul shots with 3:01 left but the Jacks scored eight-straight points in the next 76 seconds. Paluch capped the run with a layup at 1:45 remaining for an 80-73 margin.

SDSU committed back-to-back turnovers to allow the Leathernecks to cut the lead to three, 82-79, with 16 seconds left. Young grabbed a defensive rebound, was fouled and sank the second of two free throws for the four-point final margin. The Jackrabbits have now won 14-straight games over Western Illinois.

WIU’s Ashley Luke recorded game-high totals of 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
