WBK: Cougars Hot shooting Not Enough In Duluth
DULUTH, MN -

Despite shooting over 40% from the field, the Cougars (6-7, 2-7) fell on the road to Minnesota Duluth (8-4, 5-4 NSIC) 69-59 on Friday.

USF started out scoring the first six points of the game when Jaicee Ulmer made a layup just over two minutes into the game.

Alicia Boe came up big in the first half for the Cougars as she scored seven of her eight first half points in a span of 1:25. Boe's layup with 12:00 left in the first half gave USF a ten point lead which was their largest lead of the half.

Both offenses slowed towards the end of the first half as both teams made a combined three field-goals in the last 6:54 of the half.

A pair of free-throws by UMD's Danielle Flood cut the Cougars lead down to two points at the end of the half.

The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game just under two and a half minutes into the second period when Katrina Newman hit a jump shot off of a Hannah Rutten pass.

After the Cougars tied the game back up at 36, UMD then went on an 8-1 run to give them a seven point lead with just over ten minutes left in the game.

Minnesota Duluth looked as though they had put the game away with 4:55 left when Katrina Newman made a pair of free-throws to give UMD an 11 point lead. However, the Cougars cut the Bulldogs lead down to four points over the next two and a half minutes.

Over the last two and a half minutes of the game, Duluth put the game away by converting at the stripe as they went 7-of-11 from the charity stipe in the final minutes of the game.

Jaicee Ulmer led the Cougars on the offensive end of the court as she scored 15 points (6-16 FG), grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists. The effort by Ulmer was her sixth game in a row scoring in double-digits for USF.

Laura Johnson also was important for the Cougars in the game as she recorded ten points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Katrina Newman and Danielle Flood were difference makers for the Bulldogs as they combined to score 45 of UMD’s 69 points.

The difference in the game came at the free-throw line as UMD went 21-30 from the stripe while the Cougars made 9 of their 13 free throw attempts.

The Cougars will close out their road trip on Saturday when they face St. Cloud State with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
