Watertown Unveils 2020 Vision

January 24, 2013, 10:06 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Watertown Unveils 2020 Vision
WATERTOWN, SD -

A Watertown committee is asking people in the community to help carry out its long-term plans for the city.

The group made up of various community members unveiled its vision with fanfare Thursday. But those already involved hope the plan's execution is much bigger.

"I personally moved back to town after being away for 20 plus years. And we want more and more people to do that and more people to stay here and build a place we can all be proud of," Rod Arnold said.

To do so a committee has developed the framework for a plan focusing on five areas including education, employment and recreation. It reached the focal points after assessing other communities and surveying thousands of people throughout Watertown.

"So, it's been a very broad vision process and we've been able to get and hear what people want to have happen in Watertown," Ryan Boschee said.

The city goes through a vision process about every ten years, but committee members are calling this one bigger and broader than those in the past. It's hoping for hundreds of people to join the process and help turn priorities the community has listed into realities.

"I think our ultimate goal is to make Watertown a better place for especially young families but for all people to live and work," Arnold said.

When the year 2020 approaches, visionaries behind the goal say they want to see a community attractive to all ages so people wouldn't want to leave whether they're just starting school, a career or retirement.

This is a grassroots effort and involves multiple individuals and agencies.
