Watertown Police Investigating Child's Death

A man is in custody at the Codington County jail in connection with the death of a child less than three years old.

Watertown Police say authorities responded to a report of an unconscious child Wednesday. They brought the child to a Watertown hospital before the child was air lifted to Sioux Falls. Police learned Friday that the child had died as a result of the injuries. Doctors treated the child for head trauma.

Police arrested 25-year-old Jay Barse on Wednesday. He faces a felony charge of aggravated battery of a child less than three years old but police say criminal charges against him are being amended.

Police are not releasing the child's name at this time. The Watertown Police Department and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating the incident.
