Water Bill To Include Missouri River Provision

Water Bill To Include Missouri River Provision
WASHINGTON -

Lawmakers representing states along the Missouri River appear to have fought off an effort by the Army Corps of Engineers to charge residents and businesses for access to reservoir water.

North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven said Tuesday that a provision forbidding the Corps from charging residents for access to Missouri River reservoir water would be included in a larger water projects bill negotiated between the House and the Senate. Not all of the details of the larger agreement, which was announced last week, have been released. But Hoeven says he's been told his provision is in the compromise bill.

The Corps had proposed charging a water usage fee for using water in Missouri River reservoirs. Lawmakers in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana have opposed any fee, calling it unfair.
