Warrant Web Site Unveiled In Minnehaha Co.

September 14, 2009, 4:54 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Warrant Web Site Unveiled In Minnehaha Co.
From unpaid speeding tickets to rape suspects, there are more than 16,000 outstanding warrants waiting to be served each day in Minnehaha County.  In order to serve more warrants, the sheriff's office has unveiled a new tool, and you can help.

By simply typing in gotwarrants.org, you can now search to see if your friends, family, neighbors or even you have an outstanding warrant in Minnehaha County.

"We want to encourage citizens to go to that Web site and check for outstanding warrants on people they may know or suspect we may be looking for. Especially if they have information that could help us apprehend them," Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead said.

The site is updated daily. But while it gives details, like the reason a person is wanted and their last known home address, you won't find pictures.

"Mug shot photos are still confidential criminal justice information, not available for public release by law, unless they're a fugitive from justice," Milstead said.

Even if you do recognize a name, the sheriff doesn't want you to take the law into your own hands. That's why the site has a quick way for you to send tips. You can remain anonymous or enter your name. In some instances, if your information leads to an arrest you may receive a reward.

"The eyes and ears and tips from citizens have always been extremely important in our ability to find people that we're looking for," Milstead said.

Milstead says similar services used in Clay and Pennington Counties have been successful. He hopes that success will also be found in the state's most populated county.

The sheriff does caution to be careful when searching common names. The sheriff's office is also advertising the new Web site on some area billboards and with some public service announcements.
