Warrant Details SW Sioux Falls Murder

April 25, 2014, 5:32 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Warrant Details SW Sioux Falls Murder
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A suspected killer told Sioux Falls investigators he cut himself while washing dishes when detectives noticed blood on his wrist following the murder of 53-year-old Brenda Hansen.

John Senn was arrested last week and charged with Hansen's murder and now newly filed court documents are revealing more about the homicide, the evidence and the investigation.

Police say Hansen's roommates and friends had seen the 41-year-old suspected killer around the 53-year-old's home but weren't sure how the two knew each other.

Newly filed court documents say Senn was arrested less than a half hour after Hansen's murder because a friend of Hansen's roommate witnessed almost the entire encounter from start to finish.

Last Wednesday the 21-year-old woman showed up at Hansen's home on Misty Glen Place in southwest Sioux Falls to visit the roommate. When she got there she saw Senn walk into the home through the front door. She went in the back door and heard screaming coming from inside the home. She then saw Senn wipe down the kitchen counters with a clean cloth and leave the house - leaving Hansen lying on the couch with stab wounds.

The witness called in the license plate of Senn's vehicle and his description and investigators were able to track him down at this home on South Theodore Avenue where Senn was walking out as police were pulling up.

Detectives noticed blood on his wrist. Senn told them he cut himself washing dishes but officers arrested him.

When police talked with the woman who lived with Senn in the home she said he was only gone for 10 to 15 minutes and when she noticed blood on his nose Senn told her he fell in the garage.

The search warrant says officers were able to get DNA swabs from Senn, clothes with blood on them, and a 'red snort tube with white residue' found in his wallet. Items that will be analyzed as authorities continue to investigate the case against Senn.

Police say they also found Hansen's prescription Oxycontin pills on Senn when he was arrested but it is unclear what the motive was behind the murder or how the two knew each other.

The knife that was used to stab Hansen was found in the garbage of a gas station at 41st and Sertoma.
