August of 2013 will go down in the books as slightly warmer than normal for the Sioux Falls area. But calculating that "average" temperature is really a blend of extremes.
The first half of the month was very cool. A low of 49 on August 3rd was followed by normal or below normal temperatures until August 17th. 5 of those days were nearly 10 degrees below normal.
But that was the first half of the month. The second half has been just the opposite, almost 10 degrees warmer than normal. The ups and downs balance in the middle at just .5 degrees above normal for the month.
This will balance the slightly cooler than normal weather we had in July and June, although you may recall we had some warm days in late June into the first half of July.
So as we end meteorological summer, all things considered, the Sioux Falls area had a "normal" summer. What it really means is, the extremes on both ends of the scale seem will have pulled about the same weight...and that might better define "normal" weather in KELOLAND.
