Warm Temperatures Yield Flood Watches

March 16, 2011, 8:03 AM

Warm Temperatures Yield Flood Watches
HURON, SD - A National Weather Service hydrologist says warm weather is putting a dent in what's left of the snow, and that means rising levels on the James and Big Sioux rivers.

Mike Gilliespie says levels on the James are beginning to inch up.  He says there's still a lot of ice on rivers and streams, and when that ice starts moving there could be an ice jam that causes water levels to go up and down quickly.

Flood watches are issued for the James River from the Beadle-Spink line to the Missouri River at Yankton, and the Big Sioux River near Brookings, Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls' 60th Street and North Cliff Avenue.

Willow Creek near Crooks and Firesteel Creek near Mount Vernon are under flood warnings.
