Wagner Adults High Before Toddler Found Dead

July 12, 2012, 6:04 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Wagner Adults High Before Toddler Found Dead
WAGNER, SD -

Two people have been arrested in connection to a death of a toddler in Wagner.

The man and woman face felony charges connected to the death of a two-year-old girl.  An 11-year-old boy is also in custody, but has not been charged.

21-year-old Taylor Cournoyer and 28-year-old Laurie Cournoyer are both charged with failing to report the death of a child.  That's a felony because of a new law that just went on the books July 1.

Court papers say Laurie Cournoyer discovered the two year old wrapped in a blanket in the closet of their home on the Fourth of July.  But neither Laurie or Taylor could clearly remember when the last time the toddler was alive.

Taylor Cournoyer admitted to using meth a few days before the two year old's body was found, but Laurie Cournoyer told investigators that the two had used meth and smoked marijuana on July 3.  She also told investigators she took 10 sleeping pills.

Authorities believe the child died early in the morning of July 3.

The Cournoyers cared for six children in their home, including the victim.

The Wagner Police Chief said he could smell a decomposed body when he walked into the home late in the afternoon on the Fourth of July.  Authorities also interviewed two girls who said reported that their six-year-old friend had told them to come over to see quote "my dead sister."

The Cournoyers are due in court on the charges on July 17.
