Vote Count Took 7.5 Hours In Minnehaha Co.

November 7, 2012, 11:59 AM by Brady Mallory

Vote Count Took 7.5 Hours In Minnehaha Co.
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

More than 77,000 voters cast their ballots in Minnehaha County.  In fact, it was last county in the state to finish counting ballots Tuesday night.

County Auditor Bob Litz says any election that includes a presidential race will bring a higher voter turnout, which creates more work for ballot counters.

Litz says the last ballots were counted around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, which wasn't as late as the 2008 election when officials were done closer to 6 a.m.

Several precincts closed later in the evening, which also caused a few delays.

Overall, Litz says the process went pretty smoothly.

"You know there are things that slow you down, but I don't know if throwing any extra horsepower in terms of manpower will be the cure.  It's just the way things are and I think people tend to forget every four years they're up late," Litz said.

Tonight on KELOLAND News we'll hear more from Litz and find out how absentee ballots affected the results.
