Volunteers Prep For Banquet's Thanksgiving

November 22, 2012, 6:02 PM by Brady Mallory

Volunteers Prep For Banquet's Thanksgiving
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Many get to be thankful for a holiday feast in their own homes with family, and depending on who won, the usual Thanksgiving Day football game.  However, there are a lot of people who need a little extra help during the holidays.  Volunteers at the banquet spent Thursday afternoon getting ready to serve meals to the needy.

We found out why Diane Wurtz's idea of a quality day with her daughter, Emily, is not searching for a good sale.

"We just had a discussion; we just had the discussion that I've never done a Black Friday and don't plan on it," Wurtz said.

Wurtz and her teenage daughter rolled bundle after bundle of silverware as part of their Thanksgiving family time.

"I've been so blessed in my life, I just want to do that for others to see them happy," Wurtz said.

More than ten volunteers prepared 32 turkeys, buckets of mashed potatoes and gallon after gallon of gravy for the Thanksgiving meal at the Banquet.

"We're going to serve four an hour and we'll have dinner too because it's nice to sit down with them and have a meal and get to know them more," volunteer Michelle Olari said.

Over the years of her various volunteer work, Olari has noticed sometimes the people who come in here are looking for more than just a meal.  She found that out when one lady just wanted to talk to someone.

"She had a real serious problem with her feet and was telling me that story that she was in jail for two months and they didn't take care of her properly," Olari said.

As the volunteers cooked, wiped tables and rolled silverware for the more than 300 people who had nowhere else to go for Thanksgiving, they easily proved quality family time can be spent with the people you are not related to.

"I think we should share with others.  Hopefully they'll have as good of Thanksgiving as we had," Wurtz said.
