SIOUX FALLS, SD -
A group of volunteers are making their way around Sioux Falls to get an accurate count of the number of homeless in our area.
The volunteers met at Labor Ready Tuesday morning around 3 a.m. where they went over the procedures and discussed how to go about getting an accurate count of the homeless in Sioux Falls.
“It’s really our one chance to get people’s stories and to know what’s really going on for our homeless population,” Stacey Tiezen with the Homeless Advisory Board said.
And Tiezen says something that might surprise you is homeless doesn't necessarily mean you are living without a home.
“Really it stays pretty consistent. We are somewhere between 700 and 850 on any given day that we encounter. Of course, that's not just people living in cars but also in shelters,” Tiezen said.
Families living with other families under one roof are also counted.
Tiezen says the count helps the board understand the need in the community and it can even help change the way they help people.
“We use it for trends going on in the community. Have they gotten worse? Have they gotten better? Are the services we are providing actually working?” Tiezen said.
These numbers are used as a way for the state to get funding to help more homeless people.
