Veterans looking for work could find a career in Sioux Falls. A job fair is being held at Augustana College Wednesday for vets and their spouses.
Sites like the Battleship USS South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls are a reminder of the sacrifices veterans and their families make.
On Wednesday, several employers will be on hand to reach out to those who have given so much.
"We probably have close to perhaps 100 employers of all kinds. We've got retail, we've got technical, we've got building trades," Job Fair Planning Committee Member Brad Friez said.
"These employers are specifically being brought here for the veterans. They're being brought here to hopefully enhance their teams and their companies. Military vets are absolutely an asset to any company," Job Fair Volunteer Coordinator Butch Haugen said.
The Veteran's and Spouses Job Fair will take place at the Elmen Center on the Augustana campus. Organizers of the event say it's close to their hearts because of the people it serves.
"I guess I take it kind of personal that my fellow military people and their spouses have sacrificed for their country and anything we can do to give back to them, as far as in a practical way as far as employment goes, that's something that's a real worthwhile goal," Friez said.
In the past, the job fair has had about 100 veterans come looking for jobs. This year, they hope getting the word out will mean more military families advancing their careers.
"It's veterans. Veterans need to be employed. A lot of them come back from Afghanistan, Iraq are unemployed or under-employed. A lot of them are still looking for work. There's an opportunity for them," Haugen said.
Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether will also be on hand to meet with employers and vets. This job fair is a free event and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
