USD Expanding With An Office In Sioux Falls

April 24, 2012, 6:47 AM by Kellee Azar

USD Expanding With An Office In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Recruiting is a big part of the year for universities. With many local students attending college in South Dakota, one university hopes to bring in more students from the state's largest city.

The University of South Dakota has decided to open up an office in Sioux Falls. It's a place that has shown them a lot of loyalty over the years.

Expanding resources is something many universities do, especially when it comes to recruiting.

"USD and the USD foundation have teamed up to open a Sioux Falls office. It's probably more of a University of South Dakota Foundation office but we certainly are piggy backing on their efforts," USD President James Abbott said.

Putting an office in Sioux Falls was an easy decision for USD since many of its students and alumni come from there.

"First of all, we have a significant number of students from Sioux Falls and we recruit heavily from those four schools," Abbott said.

Abbott says one of the major reasons why they are making this move into Sioux Falls is because of the loyalty they have seen from the community. So by moving in, it allows USD to still be connected with the community and alumni.

"We have probably 6,000 alums in Sioux Falls. They want to keep track of the university as well so we have more one-on-one time with many of those folks by having a station in Sioux Falls," Abbott said.

And while Vermillion will always be USD's home, having a good connection is key to a successful university.

"I always think it's good to be a part of the community from which you are recruiting," Abbott said.

The new office is not only for recruiting but also used as a way to fundraise, since many of USD's sponsors come from Sioux Falls.

In the end, its biggest goal is to stay involved in a community that has been so involved with them.
