Uranium Mining Company Must Release Survey Data

Uranium Mining Company Must Release Survey Data

A licensing board of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ruled that a mining company must release the results of a geological survey to opponents of its proposed uranium mine in western South Dakota.

Judges on the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board made their decision Wednesday in Rapid City.  They're meeting this week to hear challenges to the proposed Dewey-Burdock uranium mine. Powertech Uranium Corp. is proposing the mine.

Opponents say the results of the survey could show threats to local aquifers if the company starts mining.

Powertech argues that the data is not relevant and is proprietary. Attorneys for the company say it won't show whether aquifers in the region would be threatened by their style of mining.

Christopher Pugsley with Powertech says the ruling doesn't change the company's plans.
