Update On The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House

Update On The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House

The homeless community in Sioux Falls will have a new place to seek help and shelter early next year. Monday, the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese gave an update on plans for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House.

Monday's announcement answered a lot of questions about the future facility. They discussed everything from staffing to funding and they did it at the site of the hospitality house.

We got our first look at floor plans, budgets and staffing for the new Bishop Dudley Hospitality House.

"The Diocese will ensure that individuals working in this facility are competent, professional, dedicated and respectful of the dignity of all persons," Bishop Paul Swain said.

One of those staff members is Maria Krell, who has already shown her commitment to serving others. She's currently the Executive Director for the Good Shepherd Center.

Her role and title will stay the same, but her location and staff size are changing.

"In the new, expanded place we're going to have to at least double just for daytime services. One of the hopes is to hire a case manager to come on, so they can meet one-on-one and give more intense case management to the people using the services," Krell said.

The Diocese is still looking for ways to pay for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. One way they're planning on doing that is asking the public for donations. You can give money by going to

Construction estimates for the building are about $3.6 million. The Diocese also wants to establish a $3 million Endowment fund to cover the daily operation costs of the hospitality house.

"I am pleased to announce that there are already commitments of over $1 million for the building acquisition and construction costs. $400,000 has so far been pledged through future estate gifts toward the Endowment," Swain said.

Construction will begin this summer, with a planned opening by January of next year.

Something Krell is ready to get started.

"I look forward to something new. A new adventure. Being able to offer more to the guests that we currently serve," Krell said.
