Update On South Dakota Ballot Issues

November 6, 2012, 10:53 PM

Update On South Dakota Ballot Issues
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

More surprising than the results in some of the races are some of the issues on the ballots, including the amendments and referred laws, which are not faring too well.

Initiated Measure 15, which calls for an extra penny sales tax that would be split between education and Medicaid funding, looks like it may be defeated.  With 65 percent of precincts reporting, 57 percent of votes are against the measure.  People do not want to see their sales tax increase even if it is to pay for education and Medicaid.

Referred Law 14, which would set aside money to recruit businesses to come to South Dakota, may be going down.  58 percent have voted no at this point.

The ballot issue that is faring the worst so far is Referred Law 16, where voters get the ultimate say on the controversial education bill that would give merit pay to science and math teachers.  That is sitting at 68 percent no at this time.
