A group of international students stopped by a Sioux Falls charity on Tuesday to help with lunch and get to know the patrons.
Up With People travels around the world performing and volunteering. Two of the students are from right here in Sioux Falls.
"I have friends now in Sweden and Germany and Curacao and Africa and China and Japan. And I never in a million years thought I would have those friends or the opportunities that I've had," Katelyn Gill said.
On Tuesday the group stopped by the Good Shepherd Center in Sioux Falls to serve lunch and make even more friends.
"We've just been hanging out and talking with the people here. And it's been really interesting. I've been able to learn a little bit about the Sioux culture and the Navajo culture," Helen Conzemius said.
The students didn't just come to talk; they also brought supplies to the non-profit.
"They're also helping provide the meal today (Tuesday). They were able to call around to some of the restaurants, especially Zoup, and get us a donation of the soup that is going to be served today at lunch," executive director of the Good Shepherd Center Maria Krell said.
Even though Conzemius and Gill grew up in the area, this is their first time at the center.
"I've lived in Sioux Falls for 19 years and I've actually never come here. So, it was really cool to be able to come here and see what my own community is doing and what I can do when I come back to give back," Conzemius said.
"I've discovered that volunteering is a bug. And once you get it, you can't stop. And especially now that I know this is here. I knew the name, but I didn't really know what they did. And what services they offer. And so definitely going to come back," Gill said.
And that's just one of the many reasons why this visit was a gift for everyone involved.
