Unseasonably Cold Weather Greets KELOLAND

October 6, 2012, 10:00 PM by Hailey Higgins

Unseasonably Cold Weather Greets KELOLAND
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A bitterly cold morning greeted Festival of Band parade-goers with wind chill temperatures in the teens Saturday morning in downtown Sioux Falls.

Stacy Helmbrecht and her family bundled up to watch her daughter play for Washington High.

"I have a long sleeved t-shirt, a hoodie, my coat, my scarf, my blanket, and my mittens," Helmbrecht said. "It's not bad if I don't move."

With the wind chill dropping as low as 16 degrees; it caught some people by surprise, including Nancy Halb.

"I should have a hat and I should have some gloves," Halb said.

She says the extreme temperature change this week is a shock to the system, and she's forced to dust off the furnace at home.

"We turned it on Wednesday or Thursday, the day after it was 80 and the next day it was cold. That's when we turned it on. We had air conditioning one day and furnace the next," Halb said.

And while it is unseasonably cold for this time of year, parade goers say it's just a part of living in South Dakota.

"I'm not surprised, just disappointed," Helmbrecht said.
