Two women from Eureka are dead after a three vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 12 near Ipswich, Friday.
Lavinena E. Guthmiller, 78, was driving with her passenger Evelyn Katharina Scheuffele, heading west in a 1998 Ford Explorer when the vehicle ran over an icy patch and slid into the eastbound lane. The Explorer collided with a 1997 Freightliner semi-truck sending it into the south ditch.
Guthmiller was thrown from the Explorer and pronounced dead at the scene. Scheuffele also died in the crash. Neither was wearing their seatbelt.
The collision sent the Freightliner into the north ditch, hitting a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Hedi Noel Schauer, 29, of Ashley, ND. Schauer went into the ditch trying to avoid the first crash. She was wearing her seatbelt as was a minor, who was in a child seat. Neither received injuries.
The driver of the Freightliner, 19-year-old Stephen Donald Simon from Groton, SD was not wearing a seatbelt and received minor injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
