Turner County Residents Asked To Lock Doors

Turner County Residents Asked To Lock Doors
Oscar Herrera-Menjivar

DOLTON, SD -

South Dakota authorities are searching for a missing inmate in an area near Dolton.  It's prompted law enforcement to ask people in Dolton and Marion to lock their doors.

Law enforcement officials are focusing on cornfields in the area.  Authorities are searching on the ground and in the air.

They are looking for an inmate who jumped from a transport van when it stopped for gas at a station along Interstate 90 near Spencer.  Authorities say 31-year-old Oscar Herrera-Menjivar raped a 14-year-old girl near Omaha and then headed for Florida.  He was being taken from Florida to Nebraska after picking up prisoners in Wyoming.

Turner County Sheriff Byron Nogelmeier says a citizen had a conversation with the Herrera-Menjivar Wednesday morning that was non-confrontational.  That's how they found out he was in the area around 10 a.m.

Herrera-Menjivar was last seen wearing dark shorts and a grey colored t-shirt.  Anyone who sees him should not approach him, call 911 and let officials know their location.

Nogelmeier says because of the pressure they're putting on Herrera-Menjivar, they don't know what he may do next. That's why in addition to locking their doors, the sheriff is asking people in the Dolton and Marion areas to remove keys from their vehicles.
