Tuesday Morning Business Brief

Stocks had a mixed showing in Monday trading on Wall Street. The Dow fell 42 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 12,967. The S&P was down 3 points to 1,406. The Nasdaq composite rose nearly 10 points to 2,977. Futures trading suggests gains this morning.

  • International stock markets rose today after talks over Greece's financial crisis ended with an agreement on how to reduce its debt load, paving the way for the cash-strapped country to receive the next installment of a bailout loan. Benchmark crude oil rose above $88 per barrel. The dollar fell against the euro but rose against the yen.
  • On today's economic calendar, the Commerce Department releases durable goods for October. Standard & Poor's releases the S&P/Case-Shiller index of home prices for September and the third quarter. Also today, the Conference Board has November consumer confidence.
  • Americans burned up the keyboards to try to snag those Cyber Monday deals. IBM Benchmark, which tracks online sales, says online shopping was up 28.4 percent on Cyber Monday compared with the same time period a year ago. Sales from mobile devices, which include tablets, rose 10.1 percent.
  • Greece will not be defaulting on its debts anytime soon after the cash-strapped country finally struck a deal with its international creditors. After weeks of negotiations, Greece's euro partners and the International Monetary Fund agreed to release a vital loan payment and a series of measures designed to reduce the country's massive debts.
