Trooper Steen Scheduled To Go Home Today

December 14, 2012, 12:02 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Trooper Steen Scheduled To Go Home Today
Andrew Steen

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Steen is going home today.

The injured trooper is scheduled to be released from the hospital at 1 p.m. Friday.

The news comes less than ten days after Steen had surgery to re-attach a portion of his skull, and more than eight weeks after he was hospitalized for a traumatic brain injury after being run over by a suspected drunk driver.

Steen has been in the hospital since October 17 after he tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver who led Steen and other law enforcement officers on a pursuit through Sioux Falls.

When Steen got out of his car to stop the driver after they had pulled into the parking lot of a southern Sioux Falls strip mall he was run over and suffered a traumatic brain injury along with other injuries.

Steen’s progress has been remarkable according to doctors who have said that the trooper has been ahead of schedule in his recovery. One of the crucial turning points came about ten days ago when a portion of skull, which was removed to allow for brain swelling, was reattached weeks and months ahead of schedule.

Steen and his family have had the goal of being home by Christmas and with Friday’s news that goal looks like it is going to be accomplished.
