Trooper In Critical Condition Because Of Pursuit

Trooper In Critical Condition Because Of Pursuit
Trooper Andrew Steen | 2008

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

An eight-year veteran with South Dakota Highway Patrol is in the hospital after being hit by a suspect of a pursuit in southern Sioux Falls.

Captain Kevin Joffer says 34-year-old Trooper Andrew Steen, who works out of Sioux Falls, is in critical condition following the incident.

Joffer says the pursuit started around 2:30 a.m. on the west side of Sioux Falls and went through different parts of the city before entering the parking lots for The Bridges at 57th strip-mall.  That's where officials say Trooper Steen's vehicle was first hit by the female suspect's car.  Then Steen was hit by the car, causing his injuries.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says the 25-year-old female suspect was wounded during an officer-involved shooting.

Joffer says at some point the suspect drove away from the parking lot and headed north on Western Avenue.  She was later arrested near 47th Street and Western Avenue and taken to the hospital.  Her name and condition have not been released.

"This ended up being a multi-locations type event and again, I don't want to get into the particulars of anything because we're still trying to piece it together. This happened just a few hours ago. Our main purpose has been to attend to the trooper and his family to make sure he's doing okay and we're letting the investigators take the lead on the piecing it together," Joffer said.

In addition to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff's office were also involved in the chase.

The DCI is leading the investigation.  Businesses at Bridges at 57th will be closed while authorities review the crime scene.
