From blizzard conditions to crippling ice, the weekend snow storm lived up to its billing.
When forecasting these classic, late winter snow storms, things usually get pretty complex with precipitation type. The classic path of these storms usually puts the Sioux Falls area in the questionable zone between rain, snow and ice; just a few miles can make a big difference. This storm followed that classic path so where just 50 miles made a huge difference.
The two highlights leading into the event were a pocket of very heavy snow for the northeast and the ice potential in the southeast.
As the storm moved through, its final path tracked about 50 miles north of where forecasted, which pushed the heaviest snow to areas along and north of Highway 14 up around Aberdeen, Watertown and Sisseton.
This move north also took Sioux Falls from a forecast of snow to sleet and freezing drizzle. Yet Madison picked up 10 inches of snow.
Thankfully, we have no real big storms to track for the time being, though we may have some light snow for the end of the week.
