Toys R Us Prepares For ‘Black Friday Weekend’

November 19, 2012, 4:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Toys R Us Prepares For ‘Black Friday Weekend’
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Check the calendar and you'll see we're now just days away from Black Friday.  While that's the day many bargain-hunting shoppers are preparing for, KELOLAND stores have been gearing up for the holiday season for weeks and even months.

The aisles of Toys R Us in Sioux Falls are busier than usual, and every available inch of the store is holding toys of every shape and kind.  Black Friday marks the start of the most critical time of sales for the retail industry. That's why the Sioux Falls store is stocking up.

"Bringing in tons of freight to load up for the season; we're used to getting a couple of deliveries a week and now we go to deliveries almost every single night.  So it's definitely a little bit challenging, but it's also really exciting," Manager TJ Cameron said.

That excitement includes studying and preparing to carry what will be the hottest items for the holidays.  That includes the hard-to-find, new Wii U gaming console.

And while preparing for Black Friday has been weeks in the making for this store, they're still hiring help for the remainder of the holiday season.

"Many retailers hire 25 to 50 percent more staff; we more than triple our staff.  We go from a core team of 30 to 40 team members to well over 100," Cameron said.

The Sioux Falls Toys R Us opens for Black Friday at 8 p.m. Thursday.  Cameron says while much emphasis is placed on what's now known as "Black Friday weekend," the key to success for retailers is attracting business from now through the holidays and beyond.

"I think Black Friday is more of an experience.  Of course, it is really critical to our business, but it's also a day where a family can go out, load up the car and wait in line.  Some people really love that type of thing," Cameron said.

And then there are others who prefer to skip the shopping rush.  That's why Cameron says Toys R Us and many others will offer discounts all weekend, on Cyber Monday and right up to last-shopping minute.
