Tornado Numbers Down Across The Nation

With our late spring and cool weather it is no real surprise the severe weather season is off to a slow start across KELOLAND.
Even more surprising, May has been pretty quiet across the country after a historic April.
Nationally, April averages 163 tornadoes. This year, we saw more than four times that at 875. May is usually our busiest tornado month, averaging nearly 300 tornadoes. This year its been quiet with only 33 reports nationwide. South Dakota is quiet as well, with just three tornado reports this year.
The current weather pattern just hasn't been favorable to severe weather. There's a blocking pattern in place and the jetstream is in Canada. That being said, things can change quickly. We will need to keep a close eye on the end of May as well as June.
