There is really no national guideline set for keeping students inside during the cold weather, but the administration at St. Michael Elementary School in Sioux Falls says when the temperatures are subzero, going outside is no fun and games.
Many students love heading outside when it’s cold and snow is on the ground, but with the cold temps, the playground at St. Michael Elementary School hasn't really been touched.
"If the temperature or the wind chill is zero or below we do have the children stay inside," St. Michael Elementary School Principal Lisa Huemoeller said.
Huemoeller makes the decision whether or not students will stay indoors.
"They're so little and they like to play, so they won't complain about the cold and they will stay out there until they are frozen. So, the adults need to make the decision and have them come inside," Huemoeller said.
The students like going outside, but they say, staying inside for recess can be just as fun too.
"It's fun to play with friends and if there is a new person you can ask them to play," Gerry said.
Students at St. Michael also bring winter gear with them in case they do go outside on snowy days.
