Tobacco Tax In Minnesota

Two Minnesota lawmakers want the state's cigarette tax to more than double.
They want the extra money as a way to deter smoking and to repay Minnesota schools for their budget shortfalls in recent years.
Minnesota's current tax rate is $1.23 per pack. It ranks right in the middle of all states. Doubling it would boost that to $2.52 per pack.
It's estimated to generate $320 million in the next two years.
South Dakota's cigarette tax is $1.53 per pack. In Iowa, it's $1.36.
The two Minnesota lawmakers plan on introducing the bill later this week.
