Time Test: The Three-Page Ballot

November 5, 2012, 4:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Time Test: The Three-Page Ballot
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

From the presidential race to local elections, the ballots for the 2012 Election are quite full.  The line to vote absentee in Minnehaha County has been steady for days.

"I'm a truck driver and I leave town today and I'm not sure if I'll be home tomorrow or not," voter Dana Drost said.

Initially, Drost was a little intimidated by the line outside the room.

"It looked pretty scary, but it only took fifteen minutes to get through so it wasn't so bad," Drost said.

Then he had to get his three-page ballot.  As soon as Drost stepped into the room, we started a timer.  After a minute and a half, he had his ballot in hand.  The next step was filling it out.

"I went into it pretty blind.  I didn't really know a lot that was on there," Drost said.

Drost says he spent most of his time in the booth reading through the explanations of the seven different ballot issues.  But, just six minutes and 38 seconds after entering the room, his ballot was turned in.

"I read everything and made as informed choice as I could.  If I didn't have an informed choice I didn't choose anything," Drost said.

Of course the amount of time it takes each voter to go through the ballot is going to vary, but they say the important part is getting out there and making your decisions.

"Yeah, it wasn't too bad.  I would definitely suggest doing it if you have the time to," Drost said.

That's good advice if you choose to vote absentee or traditionally on Election Day.

One way to speed up the process is to bring a filled out sample ballot with you to the polls.
