Time For Drivers To Prepare For Winter Travel

November 12, 2012, 6:02 AM by Austin Hoffman

Time For Drivers To Prepare For Winter Travel
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

There may be more than a month before it's officially winter, but this morning, many people across KELOLAND are waking up to some of the first cold temperatures of the season.

South Dakota officials issued a no travel advisory on a section of Interstate 90 over the weekend.  But no matter when you do travel this winter, you'll want to make sure your vehicle is ready for the elements.

That includes your windshield washer fluid.  Throughout the summer it usually doesn't matter too much what kind you use, but in the winter, it can make all the difference.

"And the one thing all of us forget until that first slushy day: washer fluid.  They have lots of washer fluids available from the plain old blue kind you can get that just cleans the windshield to some that are purple and orange that will actually help to de-ice that windshield as well," car expect Russ Evans said.

It's a good time to check your windshield wipers since you may not have used them much during our dry summer.

Evans says you'll also want to make sure you have the basic tools in your car.

"And by tools I mean things like blankets, things to keep you warm, hand warmers, pocket hand warmers you can pick up at the local hunting supply shops and water, it's important.  You're going to need water." Evans said.

You should also make sure your cell phone is fully charged before you leave.
